I've stayed in both locations and definitely prefer the southern end of the island (for a number of reasons) but it has been my experience that the southern end (town of Topsail Beach area) is not as rough as the northern end. Rip currents can and do occur along any stretch of the island, so always be aware.

Thousands of soldiers, trained on hundreds of pieces of anti-aircraft artillery, were posted on Topsail Island. The soldiers who trained on Topsail Island were from near by Fort Davis, located in Holly Ridge, NC (10 miles inland)...and they built a floating bridge at the site of the current swing bridge.

Topsail is best known for its sea turtle preservation and conservation efforts. Throughout the 26 miles of coastline, loggerhead sea turtles come ashore to nest and lay eggs from April through September. While you're here, visit the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Surf City.

What is the legend of Topsail Beach?

Even three hundred years after Blackbeard`s death, local lore persists in the notion that the name of the island is derived from local merchants watching out for the topsails of pirate ships that hid out near the island. Legend even says Blackbeard`s treasure is somewhere on the island, waiting to be discovered.
