Oswego, port city, seat (1816) of Oswego county, north-central New York, U.S. It lies along Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Oswego River, 35 miles (56 km) northwest of Syracuse. The name derives from the Iroquoian Indian word osh-we-geh, meaning “pouring-out place” (i.e., a river mouth)

The first family to locate in Oswego came in 1796. Oswego was incorporated as a village in 1828, and chartered as a city in 1848, only twenty years after the opening of the very important Oswego Canal. From that point forward, for many decades, Oswego operated as a port under the jurisdiction of the City of Oswego.

Oswego is known as the Port City of Central New York. Its beautiful waterfront is complemented by the maritime theme found throughout the city.

Is Oswego NY A good place to live?

The schools are good, and neighborhoods are safe. The town gets very crowded when students are back for college but doesn't cause a major problem. A few restaurants, but not much of a nightlife (mostly bars aimed at the college scene). Oswego is a basic college town filled with students, families and bars for miles.
