The town was founded in the 1700's and is situated along the Great South Bay opposite the Fire Island barrier beach which protects it from the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The town has deep roots in its maritime past. Oystering, ship building fishing and summer tourism were important parts of Patchogue's fabric.
